While the holidays are now just a fond memory, over 30 disadvantaged youngsters from around the Grand Forks, ND region are still feeling the love of the giving season. This past December, staff and customers at Sterling Carpet One Floor & Home joined forces to ensure that no child was left behind over the holidays.
The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program provides new clothing, shoes, and toys for children of families in need. Found in local malls, companies, and churches around the nation, Angel Trees are decorated with numbered paper angel tags with the first name, age and gender of a child in need of gifts. Contributors remove one or more tags from the tree and purchase appropriate gifts for the child or children as described on the tags.
Stephanie Schuler, Sterling Carpet One Floor & Home's store manager, said it didn’t take much convincing to get all hands on deck for this expansive project! She added that volunteers from the local Salvation Army erected an Angel Tree right in the store and it didn’t take long at all before all 30 “angels” were plucked from the tree. “We wanted to make sure all of these local children had something to open this year,” Schuler explained.
The gifts were delivered just in time for “Santa” to arrive on Christmas morning. Or, as one staff member penned in homage to the timeless holiday poem:
‘Twas 3 weeks before Christmas, when all through the store,
The Sterling team marveled, it was gifts galore!
Angel Tree presents selected with the greatest of care,
By customers and employees, it was quite the affair!
Many toys, shoes and clothes, and hats for their heads.
There was even new bedding bought for a little girl’s bed!
The generosity of people working together,
To help make a child’s holiday that much better!
The Sterling car was loaded, full to the top.
Straight to the Salvation Army, no time to stop!
